51ĀŅĀ× School of Music Presents First Annual Jazz Day

The 51ĀŅĀ× (51ĀŅĀ×) welcomes high school and college students, musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike for an afternoon of learning, playing and grooving with 51ĀŅĀ×’s jazz faculty and students during its inaugural Jazz Day on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 1–5 p.m. 

51ĀŅĀ×’s Jazz Day provides an opportunity for attendees to connect, play and be inspired in a welcoming, low-pressure setting. 

ā€œWe’re lucky to have our campus located in downtown Cleveland, right in the heart of one of America’s most vibrant cultural centers,ā€ Thomas Humphrey, interim director of the 51ĀŅĀ× School of Music, said. ā€œOur inaugural Jazz Day allows us to share a first look at the educational opportunities and programs available at 51ĀŅĀ×, while also celebrating the creativity and community that define jazz.ā€ 

Schedule Highlights: 

  • 1–1:30 p.m. – Faculty Performance and Introductions 

Start the day with an inspiring performance from 51ĀŅĀ×’s world-class jazz faculty 

  • 1:30–2 p.m. – Icebreaker Jam 

Jump right in with a fun ā€œno wrong notesā€ session alongside 51ĀŅĀ× faculty and students — shake off the nerves and make some noise 

  • 2–3 p.m. – Instrument Breakouts 

Work directly with faculty on their instrument and pick up new techniques, tips and insights  

  • 3–4 p.m. – Improv Workshop 

Explore the art of improvisation with 51ĀŅĀ× jazz students as the live rhythm section  

  • 4–5 p.m. – Jam Session and Faculty Performances 

Cap off the day by performing alongside 51ĀŅĀ× students and renowned jazz faculty: Chris Vance (bass and guitar), Joe Miller (trumpet), Dave Sterner (saxophone), Bill Ransom (percussion) and Jackie Warren (piano) 

  • 5–6:30 p.m. – Wrap-Up Reception 

Mingle and celebrate a great day of music with refreshments
